Peach Bows out with Victory

9 Nov 2017

On Saturday 21st October the first Junior squash tournament of the season was held at the NSC.
The competition was the Autumn Ranking Tournament and it was split into 2 sections. The first section had 9 players split in to three groups of 3. The winners of each group went through to the final play off round to compete for the top 3 places. Callum Larkin won Group A by playing some brilliant squash and serving brilliantly, Lucy Rice won Group B playing accurate squash, and Kai Kiernan won Group C with maximum points in his group. In the final play off round, Kai, Lucy and Callum all played each other for 1st place with Callum coming out on top in the end with his brilliant serves to take his first Junior squash title. Final Positions- 1st Callum Larkin, 2nd Kai Kiernan, 3rd Lucy Rice, 4th Thomas Gray, 5th Cai Lewis, 6th Ibraheem Minhas, 7th Deniz Yenituran, 8th Ellenor Rice, 9th Abbie Kermode.
In section 2 of the draw, there were 17 more experienced players. In the first round Ellen Rumney played a great game against Rory Van Gemeren with the latter just coming out on top. In the second round the two young rising super stars Ben Leith and Christian Webster played the experience of Oliver Williams and Emma Leith. Ben started very well against Oliver taking an early 7-1 lead playing controlled and accurate squash, but in the end Oliver showed his experience to come through in a very close match. Christian played well against Emma, but the latter played brilliant squash to win the match. Going into the third round Isaac Quayle beat Cameron Bell with both showing their improvement. In the first semi-final number one seed Ben Peach took on Clare Townsend with the latter taking an early lead forcing Ben into mistakes, but Ben’s power came through and he booked his place in the final. The next semi final saw this seasons junior star Oliver Waite, who has won 3 out of 4 matches in his first appearances in the senior C league, take on the experience of Calum Baker. Calum stepped up his game for this match and came through in 2 games to reach the final agains Ben Peach. In the final Calum took the first game after racing out of the blocks but the next game was a total contrast with Ben winning. In the deciding game Ben played brilliant line and length squash to win his final Junior tournament as he turns 19 later this year. Overall brilliant squash from everybody and all showing their huge potential and big improvements. Final standings- 1st Ben Peach, 2nd Calum baker, 3rd Clare Townsend, 4th Oliver Waite, 5th Oliver Williams, 6th Emma Leith, 7th Rebecca Kelly, 8th Aaron Rumney, 9th Christian Webster, 10th Ben Leith, 11th Leighton Ginty, 12th Isaac Quayle, 13th Harvey, 14th Cameron, 15th Leo Taylor, 16th Rory Van Gemeren, 17th Ellen Rumney.
Recently in September 11 juniors from the Academy travelled across to compete in the Merseyside Junior County Closed tournament in Liverpool. A big well done to Amaline Batty who won girls u15’s Tournament and also a big achievement for Ben Leith and Ben Peach who came second in their respective age groups.
